Garlic Germidour – Early Purple Softneck Variety
Garlic Germidour is a reliable French variety, known for its attractive purple-tinged skins and mild yet full flavour. As one of the earliest maturing garlic types, it produces plump, firm cloves that store well and enhance a wide range of dishes with a delicate, aromatic touch. It can be harvested from May, semi-dry from June and dry in June and July.
Planting Instructions
Plant Garlic Germidour in autumn for the strongest yields, though an early spring sowing is still possible. Choose a sunny, free-draining site with fertile soil. Break the bulb into cloves, keeping the skins intact, and set each clove pointed end up, around 15 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart, at a depth of 2–3 cm. Keep the bed weed-free, water lightly in dry spells, and cease watering once the leaves begin to yellow. Harvest from late June, lifting bulbs to dry thoroughly before storing in a cool, airy place.
Healing and Health Benefits
Garlic has long been prized as both food and remedy. Rich in allicin, Germidour supports cardiovascular health, helping to regulate blood pressure and cholesterol. Its natural antibacterial and antifungal qualities strengthen the body’s defences, while its antioxidant properties protect against cellular damage. Once viewed simply as kitchen medicine, garlic remains a valued ally for immune health and overall wellbeing.
