The Native English Bluebell

Britain’s favourite wildflower the native bluebell is an unforgettable sight in any copse. Each year a walk in our native woodlands is as pleasurable a tradition as any, is the dramatic show of wild bluebell carpets through Oak and Beech woodlands. In addition, they naturalise and colonise on clifftops or open ground.

Bluebells do not like strong competition, as in a lawn situation, but strive in those corners of the garden where other plants might fail due to shading during the summer. The flower is a sky blue in a shady situation and the petals take on a violet streak when exposed to direct sunlight.

Bluebells spread predominantly by seeds, bulb splitting is less often observed. From seed to flowering takes at least 4 years.

In your own garden these can be planted near hedges and under trees in partial shade. Much loved and savoured by Brimstone butterflies and solitary bees. Pollination is predominantly by bumblebees and is an important early season crop.

Flowering Month: Apr/May Height: 35cm Density: 40m2 Position: Half/Full Shade

PLEASE NOTE BULBS WILL BE SHIPPED FROM OCTOBER 23 - BLUEBELLS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE GREEN MARCH - APRIL 24 - click here to order
